Endodontic Procedures

Endodontic therapy treats the inside of the tooth. “Endo” means inside and “Odons” means tooth. The inflamed or infected pulp tissue is removed by accessing through a small opening usually on the biting surface of the tooth. Anterior teeth are accessed from the back of the tooth. The canal space is then cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. A biocompatible material called gutta-percha is placed with an adhesive cement which completely seals the root canals. The access opening is closed with a temporary filling. You will then be advised to return to your dentist for the necessary restorative procedure. With proper care your treated tooth can last as long as natural teeth. This is possible in a fully developed tooth because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissue surrounding it.
